Many people prefer to watch foreign films rather than locally produced films. Why could this be? Should governments give more financial support to local film industries?

Sample essay that was written by an IELTS student

It is true that foreign films are more popular in many countries than nationally manufactured movies. The shift of choice could be attributed to a variety of factors. I believe that governments should promote local film making by subsidizing the industry. This essay will discuss why people find foreign movie enjoyable and the measure that governments can take to address these issues.

There are two major reasons to the popularity of foreign movies; huge budget for special action effects and internationally recognized famous celebrities. Due to spending big money on these movies, special action effects are made to attract the audience, which contribute a immense part to get attention globally. Another reason why these international movies are so successful is that film producers often cast most famous actors and actress, who are widely recognized in the world. The fans of these celebrities think that these actors would maximize their acting abilities and play their character well. Therefore, it would positive affect the quality of the film.

In my opinion, governments should help domestically produced films. Firstly, governments should encourage the film makers in order to make high budget movies. In other words, if government will financially help to make huge budget films, the quality of movie will become improve. Secondly, governments can develop advanced studio so that local film industry would access the movie with advanced technology. This means that if governments do help for the film industry, it will bring the audience to the theater to enjoy the pictures, and local film industry would complete international movies.

Taking all these points into accountability, I strongly advocate that financially help from governments could help to raise the quality of local movies and allow them to compete with foreign movies which are currently dominant in the market.
